In this month's feature Ian Purvis will give some tips when looking to buy your new Saab.

Ian is a fully trained Saab technician, who now manages an independent Saab specialist workshop.

In this article he will try to give you some help in deciding on your second-hand purchase.

Firstly there are some basic checks that apply to any used car purchase:

If replying to a private ad always view the vehicle at the sellers address, never meet at petrol stations etc, or except an offer of the vendor bringing the car to you.
Ask to see the registration document, look for the date of the last change of owner, if its recent or not the address you are viewing the vehicle at, ask why.
If possible take a friend along for a second opinion, if possible a mechanic.
If you find a car that you wish to purchase, leave a small deposit and then obtain an HPI report. This will show up any unexpected history such as accident damage or outstanding finance.

Buying from a Saab dealer whether independent or main dealer could possibly be more expensive, but will come with peace of mind. The vehicle will have been checked before sale and will probably come with a warranty, and be free of any outstanding finance etc.

Below, you can access various guides to the things to look for when buying a used Saab, but also follow your instincts. In the trade it is said a good car sells itself, and no amount of polishing will revive a bad one!

Next month we will be featuring
a Buyers Guide for a 9000 (1985-98)

We'll also be road testing a 1997
9000 CSE Anniversary

All Saabs are capable of huge mirages if looked after. A Saab service history is important, and proves the owner has attended to problems as they arose.

Don't look at mileage as a buying limitation. A car with 90k miles that's had a new hea dgasket, and timing chains, is a better buy than an 80k-mile car that will soon need these items attending to.

And remember, you are buying one of the safest cars on the road that will become a member of the family and give years of motoring pleasure.

This feature is intended as a guide and is not a definitive work. Prices and Costings quoted are merely approximations, and you should confirm pricing with your garage prior to works being undertaken. Please get your future car inspected by a qualified person or garage before you purchase.
