Welcome to the saabtrader road test page. Each
week we will feature various Saab models, these
will be actual cars from private and trade alike.
We aim to make these road tests impartial, fun
and informative.
This week we are testing a Saab 2.0 litre SE
9-3 Convertible.
The 900 range of cars was replaced in 1998 by
the 9-3, this was not just a makeover of the old
model, but a complete revision including some
1100 changes across the board. Although it looks
very similar to the old car, it offers much improved
levels of handling and general build quality.
Saab also introduced a diesel at this point, although
not offered on the convertible.
The car we are road testing here is an Eco Power
,which in our opinion is the best power option,
giving good performance and economy. It is also
offered as a 2.0 litre injection, and 2.0 litre
turbo. As with all convertibles it suffers from
some scuttle shake, but is never a problem. Visibility
when reversing is also a little limited, but is
OK when the roof is down. This car is finished
in cosmic blue metallic bodywork, with beige leather
upholstery. As with all SE it comes with walnut
facia and alloy wheels as standard.
The Saab 93 comes with either a 5 speed manual
gearbox, or the excellent 4 speed automatic from
General Motors. The automatic offers a more relaxed
drive that suits the convertible very well.
You may think a convertible impracticable for
holidays and school runs etc, but the 9-3 is as
practical as the next car, and if you pack carefully,
touring with the 9-3 will give weeks of open top
fun on holiday.
The Saab 9-3 tested here has covered 21,000 miles
and shows no signs of wear. It steers and brakes
superbly and has a full service history. Although
more expensive to purchase than a tin top cabriolet,
the 9-3 has one of the lowest depreciation rates
in the used car market.
