The 9-3 was introduced as an updated model of the 900 94-98, in
1998 and was much more than a facelift.
The biggest improvement can be found in the suspension, the previous
model lacking feel on the road.
A different design to the anti roll bar mounting along with beefier
anti roll bars and better dampers, improved the handling dramatically.
The engine and transmission are basically the same, with all engines
becoming turbo charged in 99.
The exterior also benefited from new bumpers, grille and lights,
giving the car a more quality look.
When buying a 9-3 look out for the problems listed below. Thankfully
they are not that common.
9-3s are generally of a very good build, and are as practical as
the old 900 it replaced.
2.
Engine
As with all Saabs, the engines are capable of high mileage,
but need to have oil changes at the service intervals, we've seen a few engines
destroyed because of old oil.
When looking at a purchase make sure the oil is not thick and heavy.
3.
Transmission
Gearboxes can give a rumble on low revs in 1-2-3. This will
need a full rebuild, although the box can seem to carry on for quite sometime
after the problem has become evident.
When test driving, check
reverse does not jump out, travel backwards
for a distance not holding the gear change
and see if it jumps out on deceleration.
If it does the reverse sincro hub is probably worn, this requires a full strip down and will cost £500
- 700 incl. Labour.
4.
Electrical
The display units for the info and climate control can lose their display. This is a problem Saab recognise, and if the car is less than 3 years old, less than 60,000 miles and has full history, they should exchange them, if not they cost about £230 each, but fit very easily.
5.
Air Conditioning
Check the air-conditioning is working (if fitted). The system can pick up leaks, this is normally a condenser,
and should cost £210 for the condenser and 2 hours to fit, and £50 for a re- gas.
6.
Brakes
The handbrake is the same as the 900 and needs careful
adjustment, if incorrect it will only stop on last click.
